Developing projects that chime with the Council’s current and planned services

Although Aberdeenshire Council provides a weekly kerbside food waste collection service, it does not currently collect garden waste at the kerbside, with the onus being on householders to either compost their garden waste at home or to take it to one of the Council’s 15 Household Recycling Centres (HRC) or 12 seasonal garden waste points. If the distance to take garden waste to your nearest Household Recycling Centre (HRC) or seasonal garden waste point is considered long, this is where a community composting project could particularly provide a valuable service to your community, managing the waste locally and providing a compost that can be used by householders or community growing projects – providing environmental benefits, reducing costs and providing an opportunity for the development of local skills.

What the council currently does with food and garden waste collected

Food waste collected from households in the Aberdeenshire area is bulked at 6 waste transfer stations before being hauled to the private sector business, Keenan Recycling where it is then processed at its in-vessel composting facility at New Deer.  Garden waste collected by the council is also sent to Keenan Recycling where it is composted using an open windrow system.
